Personal Safety Advice

Personal safety is an issue that both men and women need to be aware of. Crime can, and does, happen to everyone, regardless of age or gender. Robbery, rape, assault and even street harassment can all be devastating to the victim of the crime. Law enforcement and police officers are constantly trying to educate the community with common sense tips and strategies to avoid becoming a victim of a personal crime.

Whether a person is walking in a parking lot, through a park or even in a secluded part of an indoor mall or shopping center, being prepared is the best prevention when it comes to personal safety. One of the most noted personal safety and self defense techniques taught by experts in law enforcement is simply being aware of one’s surroundings. By walking directly to a car or other location and directly scanning the area, there is less chance of being accosted by a criminal. Those who walk with a purpose and direction are less likely to experience a personal safety issue, since the appearance of confidence may deter criminals from taking advantage of the situation and surroundings. Trusting intuition and letting others know of any plans in unfamiliar or potential dangerous locations can also help with personal safety. If you are unsure whether you are being followed, you can make four right turns while walking and see if the person in question remains behind you. It is unlikely that another person will be walking in a circle identical to yours, and if they continue to follow you, seek help immediately.

While it may not always be practical to carry personal safety devices like pepper spray or a stun gun, devices like key chain alarms or the BuddyGuard, a mobile personal safety application for the iPhone, BlackBerry and (coming soon) Android, can bring peace of mind and additional security, especially when traveling to unfamiliar locations. Taking a self-defense or martial arts course can increase your knowledge of how to fight back in case your personal security is compromised, and many have specialized curriculum that involves how to escape an attacker with a weapon.

Keeping a calm head is possibly the most important way to survive a threat to personal security.By remaining aware of one’s surroundings, listening to intuitive feelings, carrying personal protection devices and/or taking a self defense course, the impact of personal crime can be minimized or even eliminated. Personal safety is a priority of law enforcement and police departments, and the strategies, tips and advice given by these professionals can help keep you and your family safe.
