Help People with a Career as a Substance Abuse Counselor

If you have been looking to build a career in criminal justice and looking for the right course to do, you could definitely consider taking up courses that will provide you the opportunity to become an authorized substance abuse counselor. Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors provide counseling services to people addicted to alcohol, drugs, and gambling. The requirement for such counselors has shown a substantial increase in the last few years and is expected to grow further in the coming years.

Counseling sessions are available for individuals, families and groups. Rehabilitation counselors for providing treatment to clients addicted to drugs, racing and gambling and counselors working in community centers providing counseling to behavioral disorders and mental health disorder are the two major categories of counselors.

People interested in making a career in counseling need to have certain attributes such as sufficient physical and mental strength and the patience to provide quality services to the affected parties. If you have all the required attributes, then you could go ahead and complete the qualifying degree or master’s degree in the relevant subject.

Most of states look for master’s degree from the candidates seeking a career in counseling. For the required license, states look for a master’s degree. For those with a bachelor’s degree, there are options of working as an associate aide to the main counselor and also as a social worker. You have to choose a course that is accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Some of the schools that offer CACREP accredited criminal justice degree include Kaplan University, University of phoenix, Argosy university online, University of Rockies, Walden University, Grand Canyon university, Keiser university, North Central university, Baker college online, South University online and Ashworth college.

In terms of the earning potential, government employers provide the maximum salary to qualified counselors. Hospitals and social welfare centers provides salaries that are slightly less than the salary provided by the government. Residential care facilities provide the lowest salary among the different employment options.

The job outlook for people completing their graduation or post graduation is getting better by the year and there is also a need to fill vacancies which are being left behind by people retiring from service and also those who seek voluntary retirement. There are a number of online job boards that lists all counselor and social worker jobs. You could register with an online job board and search for openings in your preferred location.
